Defending champion France qualified for next year's European Championship, cruising to a 2-0 victory over Slovenia at Ljubljana.

Bulgaria, the Czech Republic and Sweden also advanced, while Germany and Italy moved closer to qualifying.

And David Beckham made his first return to Manchester since signing with Real Madrid as England put in a lacklustre effort to beat Liechtenstein 2-0.

France got goals from David Trezeguet and Olivier Dacourt. The French, who clinched Group One, are the only unbeaten, untied team in qualifying.

Despite their perfect record, the French team isn't getting cocky going into next year's tournament.

"I still don't think we are favourites for the championship,'' said French captain Marcel Desailly. "We have just gotten back on to the right path.''

At Belgrade, Sasa Ilic scored with eight minutes left as Serbia-Montenegro rallied for a 1-1 tie against Italy, which had gone ahead when Filippo Inzaghi scored in the 22nd.

At Manchester, England won its eighth straight game, beating Liechtenstein as Michael Owen and 17-year-old sensation Wayne Rooney scored second-half goals. England, first in Group Seven with 19 points, can qualify with a win or a tie on Oct. 11 at second-place Turkey.

Mario Frick almost stunned England in the first 15 seconds by bursting past Beckham in the England half and racing through only to shoot high and wide with just the goalkeeper to beat.

Beckham defended the English squad for its sloppy performance.

"We always want to put in a good performance, but we said before the game that if it's 1-0 or 2-0 we'd take it," said Beckham, one of two English players to hit the post.

At Dortmund, Fredi Bobic and Michael Ballack scored to lead Germany to a 2-1 win over Scotland. At Prague, the Czech Republic beat the Netherlands 3-1, and visiting Bulgaria beat Andorra 3-0.

In Brussels, Belgium upset Croatia 2-1. Sweden advanced with a 2-0 win over Poland in Warsaw.

Raul Gonzalez scored two second-half goals as Spain won 2-1 over visiting Ukraine at Elche.

BRAZIL WINS AGAIN: Brazil moved into first place in South American qualifying for the 2006 World Cup last night, beating Ecuador 1-0 on a 13th-minute goal from Ronaldinho.

Brazil now sits atop the 10-team South American qualifying standings with a 2-0 record. They beat Colombia 2-1 last week.

Ronaldinho scored with a header off a centring pass from Roberto Carlos.

In other games, Bolivia routed visiting Colombia 4-0, and Paraguay rallied to defeat visiting Uruguay 4-1.

GREEKS PROBED: European soccer's ruling body is investigating Armenia's allegation that Greece wanted it to throw a qualifying match for the 2004 European Championship last weekend.

UEFA appointed a disciplinary inspector to look into the accusation, and wants to have the probe wrapped up before the next round of qualifiers in October.
